Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming dramedy, Fatherhood, starring Kevin Hart as a father doing his best to raise his daughter on his own after the death of her mother right after she was born. The story is inspired by the true story of Matthew Logelin and his 2011 book, Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love. Hart leads an ensemble cast that also includes Lil Rel Howery, Anthony Carrigan, Alfre Woodard, Paul Reiser and DeWanda Wise.

Development on the project has been ongoing ever since 2015 when Channing Tatum first signed on to star in and produce the film with TriStar attached to release. After years spent in development, Hart signed on to star in the film in 2019 with Paul Weitz signing on to direct and co-write alongside Dana Stevens. Produced by Columbia Pictures, the film was originally planned for a theatrical release in early 2020, but much like other films last year, it saw frequent delays due to the global pandemic until the rights were eventually sold to Netflix and a June 18, 2021 release was set.

Netflix has debuted the first trailer for Fatherhood, giving viewers a better look at Hart's portrayal of Logelin and his struggles as a single father. The trailer also shows the film's balance of some light comedy and very real, powerful issues Logeli faces in his life. The trailer can be viewed below:

Hart is no stranger to the world of comedy across his 20-year career, but the trailer shows a more grounded and real side to the performer that should draw plenty of viewers in to the film. Though there have been plenty of stories of single fathers struggling to raise their children in the wake of a personal tragedy, Fatherhood does seem to be utilizing certain tropes of the genre and formula to conjure up every tear possible in audiences. With it being Hart's first real exploration of dramatic territory since the English-language remake of The Intouchables, its success could also pave the way for more out-of-the-box roles for Hart.

Whether fans want more outrageous comedy from Hart or grounded characters, Fatherhood is certainly coming at the right time. Hitting Netflix just in time for Father's Day weekend and going up against Disney and Pixar's Luca and Peter Rabbit 2, it'll offer a nice bit of content for parents looking for something they can enjoy together or with older kids. After all, who couldn't use a good tearjerker to celebrate their love of their fathers.
