Patrick Dempsey cited script disagreements as the reason why the sequel to Enchanted, titled Disenchanted, has been so delayed. Enchanted first hit theaters in 2007 and starred Amy Adams, Dempsey, James Marsden, Idina Menzel, Rachel Covey, and Susan Sarandon. The Disney musical romantic comedy film, which is part animation and part live-action, follows Giselle (Adams) as she is forced from her home in Andalasia to New York City. While in New York, she meets Robert (Dempsey) and his daughter (Covey) who help Giselle adjust to a world she is entirely unfamiliar with. Just as Robert teaches Giselle about life outside of a fairy tale, Giselle teaches him just as much about optimism and true love.

In late 2020, more than 13 years after Enchanted’s release, Disney announced that the sequel is finally moving forward, and it will stream on Disney+. Adams, Marsden, Menzel, and Dempsey will all be back to reprise their roles for Disenchanted. Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jayma Mays are joining the cast for the sequel as well. Adam Shankman, who directed 2007’s Hairspray, is also at the helm for Disenchanted.

Variety spoke with Dempsey about the highly anticipated sequel to Enchanted, and the Golden Globe-nominated actor touched upon the reasoning behind the film's holdup. His statement can be read below:

Every year they were like, ‘We’re going to do this. It’s going to get done,’ but then no one could agree on the script. It’s such an important film for them and it’s a satire. It’s not a typical Disney movie. It’s kind of off-brand a little bit. Yet we give honor to all of those Disney movies that have come before and they finally now have figured it out. And we’re old enough, so it’s like a midlife crisis movie.

Dempsey also talked about how he will be singing publicly for the first time in Disenchanted. He seems a bit nervous but also excited to perform in some of the film’s musical numbers. He teased that the “lyrics are really fun” and “the numbers have really great choreography.” Disenchanted will hope to meet the high standard that the first film set in terms of music. Enchanted received three Oscar nominations, all for the Best Original Song category, which included “Happy Working Song,” “So Close,” and “That’s How You Know.”

The fact that Disenchanted’s filmmakers have taken so long to create the sequel is a good sign for both the music and story because it indicates that they would rather take their time to get it right than release a rushed movie a couple years after Enchanted just to capitalize off of its popularity. While it is always difficult to wait for a sequel, especially when the wait lasts more than 13 years, fans should appreciate how much care and effort is being put into the making of Disenchanted.

Also, this movie couldn’t come at a better time. After such a devastating year, people are looking to watch a film that brightens up their spirits and gives them a reason to smile. If Disenchanted is anything like Enchanted, the sequel will provide exactly what fans are looking for, and Dempsey agrees that audiences need some escapism right now.
