James Gunn trolls The Suicide Squad's John Cena on his birthday by making him eat more empanadas. Gunn is best known for helming Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Now, the writer/director is set to venture into the DC Extended Universe, bringing audiences the sequel/spiritual reboot, The Suicide Squad. Much like its predecessor, the film will focus on a team of anti-heroes (Task Force X) forced into working for the “good” guys. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and other returning members of the squad will be joined by newcomers, including former WWE champion John Cena’s Peacemaker.

As seen in the newest trailers, Cena’s “douchey Captain America” doesn’t care how many “how many men, women, and children [he needs] to kill” to get peace. Cena is completely committed to the comedy of it all, even wearing Peacemaker’s costume for various promotional interviews. During WarnerMedia's CCXP panel last year, Cena recalled filming a rather difficult scene where he was required to eat an empanada. Instead of pacing himself (or just nibbling on it), Cena decided to down the entire thing in one take. Being that it was a complicated shot for Gunn, Cena ultimately ate 31 empanadas to get it right. Cena said that one more empanada would've ended in disaster; unfortunately, it looks like Cena will be having at least one more.

Cena recently responded to a birthday tweet by posted Gunn. The director explained that Cena’s character will be required to eat in the HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker. So, when props asked what food, for Cena’s birthday, Gunn told them empanadas. Cena responded to the tweet by asking for a bigger costume with a “poop chute” followed by a suitable hashtag:

Actors have often lamented the amount of food they’ve been forced to consume while filming, but Cena’s struggle sounds especially arduous (and funny). Cena has said he hopes audiences will appreciate what he went through to film that scene—something that might not have been given a second thought otherwise. Regardless, Cena and Gunn clearly enjoyed working together on The Suicide Squad. Gunn will serve as the writer and occasional director for the spinoff series that is currently shooting. Peacemaker will explore the origin story of Cena's character and is aiming for a January 2022 release date.

The Suicide Squad’s red band trailer set a new record with 150 million views in its first week. People are praising what looks to be a very fun and very adult film. Warner Bros. will debut the film both in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, avoiding any coronavirus-related delays. The studio no doubt hopes Cena’s Peacemaker performance will be a standout, having already started work on the spinoff series. At 44, Cena’s schedule seems busier than ever, starring in the upcoming F9, The Suicide Squad, and eating empanadas on the set of Peacemaker.
