Wonder Woman 1984 is headed back to HBO Max in May. The movie originally premiered on the streaming platform last Christmas, and it completed its initial run on the platform the next month. The movie was also released in select theaters. Wonder Woman 1984 is a movie that follows the Diana Prince (Gal Gadot)—known to many as Wonder Woman—as she attempts to get to the bottom of a global crisis brought on by one man's control of the Dreamstone, a mysterious entity that grants wishes for people at the expense of something they love. That mission leads her to an epic showdown that will decide the fate of the entire planet.

Blockbuster movies being released through streaming platforms is a trend that truly began during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With movie theaters almost everywhere being shut down due to the virus, companies who spent $100 million or more on movies had to find a way to make their money back and somehow turn a profit. With that in mind, platforms like Disney+ and HBO Max began releasing films they had the rights to use. Now, WW84 is headed back to the place it first started.

Earlier this week, HBO Max released a streaming list for all the movies and TV shows coming to the platform in May, and Wonder Woman 1984 was one of the flicks. Other movies set to arrive on HBO Max are 300: Rise of an Empire and the original Mortal Kombat.

The film was eagerly anticipated leading up to its release, but it ended up getting mixed reviews from critics. In an interview from last month, Connie Nielsen, who plays the role of Diana's mother, Hippolyta, said that the film being released after so many delays led to undue scrutiny being applied to it. She also noted that the movie was faced with the challenge of being compared to the Wonder Woman film that came before it.

  1. Although Wonder Woman 1984 received mixed reviews, a sequel for the film was confirmed shortly after it was released. Given that the last Wonder Woman movie took place in 1984, there's no telling what time period in which the events of the next film will take place. In an interview from last December, Gadot herself said she didn't want the next movie to take place in the past, as she feels it's time for her character to move on.
