The reboot of Mortal Kombat became the third live-action movie in the beloved franchise, fixing many of the issues of the original - which has nonetheless become a cult classic - and the more problematic Annihilation sequel from 1997. It delivers on the promised R rating, sticking to a mostly faithful adaptation model that brings iconic characters to life as well as expanding to the lore with the introduction of new mysterious character Cole Young, whose identity inspired lots of speculation ahead of the movie's release. With his story now set in place and the lore of the world established, what can come next is expansion into stranger worlds and more of a set-up for the universe-spanning tournament at the heart of this universe's lore.

So is a sequel happening? There's certainly potential in the lore of Mortal Kombat to not only expand to one sequel but multiple - not to mention spin-offs, so if it doesn't it won't be for a lack of source material. And luckily for fans of the franchise and Simon McQuoid's movie, there are hints that there will be more. Here's everything you need to know about Mortal Kombat 2.

Is Mortal Kombat 2 Happening?

While there's been no concrete confirmation on a sequel for Mortal Kombat, there are some major hints that it's going to happen, provided the first movie does well enough. Simon McQuoid may have banned sequel discussions on set (according to CBR) but producer Todd Garner told a roundtable interview attended by ScreenRant that he wanted to make a sequel and that he wanted Johnny Cage to be a big part of it. On top of that, Sub-Zero star Joe Taslim has revealed he signed a five-movie contract with Warner Bros, so there was obviously some confidence of more instalments.

That question probably comes down to success. Mortal Kombat cost $95 million to produce plus Warner Bros' outlay for marketing, and though HBO Max doesn't offer traditional box office returns, the movie will open in other territories (likely including the UK) and will hit cinemas after the initial period on the streaming platform. Recently, Godzilla vs Kong became HBO Max's biggest-ever launch movie and the precedent set by that, Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder's Justice League suggests a hearty appetite for HBO Max releases. Hopefully, that translates into a green light for a sequel.
