“Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and acclaimed writer Brian K. Vaughan have become attached to a live-action adaptation of the massive anime and merchandising franchise “Gundam” for Netflix and Legendary.

The original “Mobile Suit Gundam” series began in 1979 and is set in the Universal Century, an era in which people have emigrated to space colonies because of a growing population on Earth.

Those living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence with battles fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits. The series is a cultural icon in Japan and rakes in multiple billions of dollars every year in animated films, video games, plastic models, toys, and books.

Vogt-Roberts will produce and direct from a script by Vaughan who will also executive produce. Vogt-Roberts has long been attached to direct an adaption of the video game “Metal Gear Solid” but that project hasn’t made much headway in the last few years.
